Flyfishing
It’s a nice day, and I think I’m going to go catch some trout (or a least I hope I’ll catch some!). The 30th of September is the last day of trout season, at least on the Grand River here in Southern Ontario. Hopefully it won’t be too busy.

Settling In
Over the past few days, Tamara and I have cleaned and organized our new place in Waterloo, ON. I like it. She likes it. It’s all good. We bought a 32” full HD LCD TV the other day to replace the pawn shop refurbished unit that came with the place. TV looks good now!

Home
We’re home! After ~4600 kms (from Vancouver to Waterloo), we finally made it home. We had a good drive, although it was partially marred by the occasional rainstorm. We build a box for the back of the truck and tarped it. Luckily, we did a good job on the tarping, since nothing was wet. Now just to get unpacked adn organized.

Traveling
On the road again. So last Saturday, Tamara and I did the mock wedding/reception thing. It was pretty cool. Lots of people, drinks and laughs. A good time was had by all. Now we’re slowly making our way back to Waterloo. Yesterday we drove fom Vancouver to Calgary - a pretty simple 10 hour drive. We had all our stuff in the back of the truck and had to tarp it down good since it was raining...

Married Now
On Friday, Tamara and I got married. It was cool. We had a pretty good turnout for the “small” ceremony - maybe 20-22 people. This coming Saturday is this “party” ceremony, in which we will dress up and re-enact the event. Strange but fun.

Tomorrow is the big day!
Tomorrow is the day that Tamara and I get married (legally, anyway). It should be nice. She’s looking forward to it and so am I. We have another (mock) ceremony on the 16th as well so that friends and family that couldn’t attend the first one will be able to come. Looking forward to it!

In Downtown Vancouver
Well, after 3 weeks staying in a short term rental on Renfrew and Hastings, we’re now downtown in a hotel at Davie and Denman. Much better here. More things to do. Tons of coffee, so not longer is there a need to drive for half an hour!

I've beta launched my new site
I’ve been wanting to get a professional site up for a while now, so I finally went ahead and did it. It’s here. It is currently in beta mode while I so some server configuration and some testing. At some point soon, I hope to launch it for real.

Wow, is going back to Java painful!
So I decided today to do some coding in Java. I’ve always wanted to build a feed reader - mainly to become more familiar with RSS and ATOM, not so much because I need a feed reader. After so much Ruby work, Java is really clunky feeling. I still like it, I suppose, but I miss blocks. I especially miss the unless keyword, for some reason. On the plus side, I was able to dig up a couple of...

Back From Nanaimo
Got back from Nanaimo yesterday. It pissed rain all the way back on the ferry. Not much to see and the fog was pretty heavy, so I killed some time by writing some code. Nanaimo was nice. Relaxing. Lost some cats, found them again. All was good. Had some good food, as well.

Headed To Vancouver Island
I’m off to Vancouver Island for a few days tomorrow. Been a while since I’ve been on a ferry, and I’m looking forward to it. I’m going to Nanaimo to visit my dad. Hopefully there’ll be some fun stuff to do there. Supposedly the bathtub races are on. Not sure how exciting that’ll be, but it will probably be interesting, at least.

More Vancouver Fun
Spent the day at the Vancouver Folk Festival today. Lots of fun and sun. Well, maybe a bit too much sun. I’m slightly burnt ;) Oh well, lots of fun anyway. Our main reason for going was Michael Franti and Spearhead. They closed out the evening with an hour and a half upbeat, dance crazed set. We had a good time. Plenty of iced coffee, too.

More Fun In Vancouver
Went to see Spamalot today. The one in Vancouver, not New York. It’s a musical based on Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It’s a musical, so it loses a few points based on that, but the comedy was pretty good. Of course - it’s Monty Python. They did most of the famous scenes - The Knights Who Say Ni, The Black Knight (It’s just a flesh wound), I fart in your general...

OK, so I’ve finally decided that I’m reasonably comfortable with the Tumblr4Rails plugin. It’s now been made public on GitHub here.

In Vancouver
Well, I’m in Vancouver now. It’s nice here. Tamara rented us a nice condo/townhouse on North Renfrew, which is right by the PNE grounds. This area used to be pretty scummy, but it looks quite nice and gentrified now. Today we took a walk down to Brighton Park and looked at the water and the 50 million kids in the pool.

More On Tumblr4Rails
So, I’m nearing completion of my Tumblr4Rails plugin. So far, I’m really happy with it. It supports all aspects of the Tumblr API - including multiform data uploading. This means that you can browse for an audio, video or image file and upload it to Tumblr as a post. Additionally, you can create any other type of post with little or no error. It’s as simple as: post =...

Tumblr4Rails on GitHub
So I’ve put Tumblr4Rails up on GitHub, but it’s currently in a private respository. I’m doing some last minute tweaking. Additionally, I’ve emailed the folks at Tumblr to ensure that they’re cool with my releasing it publically. I’ll make it public when I’m comfortable with all that.

Extending Your Rails Application
I played around yesterday for a few hours with a concept that I’ve recently been thinking about: application extension. I’ve been thinking about an application for a vertical market. This application would be more or less the same across various clients, but there might be small differences on a per-client basis. So the question is, how can I write a Rails application where the main...

tags in Tumblr
So, initially, I thought that Tumblr did weird stuff with <pre> tags, but it looks like I’m wrong. It only seems to cause problems in the dashboard. When looking at the public tumblelog, though, the formatting is good.

Revision to updating RubyGems
Ignore the post below. While it did upgrade to 1.2.0, unfortunately, nothing worked properly. Now I can’t seem to install anything and am receiving the following error: (Gem::RemoteFetcher::FetchError). Screw this - reverting back to 1.1.1 for the time being.

Upgrading 10 RubyGems 1.2.0 on Ubuntu Hardy Heron
So doing a simple gem update —system did not work. Nothing to update. Still at RubyGems 1.1.1 Turns out the solution, after a bit of Googling, is: sudo gem install rubygems-update -v 1.1.1  and then do gem update —system Hope that helps someone else.

Tumblr4Rails
I’m getting pretty close to being done writing my Tumblr4Rails plugin. So far it looks pretty good and will support Tumblr’s entire API. Just need to do some refactoring and spec enhancements.

JamCruise!
Just booked our cabin for JamCruise. Tamara and I were thinking about something like Italy for our honeymoon, but then we remembered JamCruise. What could be more fun than sitting in a pool all day, drinking beer and listening to some really good tunes? The cruise takes place January 4 - 9, 2009. Seems a long way off, but I can’t wait to go. It stops at Belize City and on the Yucatan...

hash_including()
So I was writing some specs today when I discovered that I needed to do something I haven’t had the need to do before: validate that a private method called by a public method received the correct parameters. Easy right? Yup should be - if its a parameratized method. In this case, its not - the method takes a hash. So it’s not quite as simple as something like: it "should call...

Moving
Man, am I tired of moving. Saturday, I’m helping a friend move. I actually don’t mind that. At least it’s someone else’s crap that needs to get moved. Hopefully they’ve packed. Nothing worse than having to pack someone else’s stuff. But then, I need to haul all my stuff and Tamara’s stuff (mostly hers) from Calgary back to Waterloo. Originally, we thought...
